La Muerteada De Las Chinas, Oaxaca Centro
$100.00 – $450.00
Description
You haven’t seen a parade until you’ve visited Oaxaca during the Dia de los Muertos celebrations in late October/early November. Throughout Oaxaca City and surrounding towns, each barrio pulses with unique parades, bouncing and twirling and winding from block to block, fueled by the insistent rhythm of their bandas. Trumpets and tubas and clarinets and drums at full throttle, echoing down narrow streets and up through church bells into communal sky. Unsurprisingly, this is my favorite of these parades, a Muerteada, which takes place at night and celebrates loved ones past. In this case the parade is called, “La Muerteada de las Chinas”, a mesemerizing interplay of synchronously spinning catrinas, color, contrast, costumes, and faces painted with elaborate skull makeup, honoring the dearly departed.
