About pic Sean N McMullen

San Diego fine art photographer and creative director Sean Nicholas McMullen is a nationally published visual artist based in San Diego, New Mexico, & Oaxaca, with over 30 years of experience.

Brief backstory: As a young artist starting out in downtown San Diego during the late 1980’s, Sean’s early black & white street photography depicts a faded city, sighing between the storied past, and the verge of the ensuing, massive re-development projects of the coming decades.

In contrast, his work across the border exploring Baja California offers a vivid glimpse into the everyday culture of México’s western peninsula. What began as weekend motorcycle excursions to the port city of Ensenada, soon blossomed into commissions to capture the daily life of farmworkers, landscapes, and street culture, ushering in a lifelong passion for revealing México’s vibrant people and places.

As a music photographer, Sean has wielded his camera at many venues, including The Casbah, where he has been resident club photographer, as well as the House of Blues, SOMA, Soda Bar, The Belly Up, ‘Til Two Club, 7 Grand, and Dizzy’s. Music festivals include Coachella, Austin City Limits, All Tomorrow’s Parties, and the San Diego Street Scene. He has also contributed to NBC 7’s Sound Diego, Where Magazine, San Diego CityBeat, Urbanist San Diego, San Diego Magazine, and San Diego Dialed In. National publications include Antiquiet, Inked, Downbeat Magazine and All About Jazz.

Most recently Sean was featured in the exhibition, “SHOOT” at Hot Water Gallery in Carlsbad, California https://htwtr.com  – a celebration of San Diego’s best music photographers. Other projects include, “La Pandilla“, a black & white tribute to Mexican Cine Negro. Keep informed of these and future projects by following him on Instagram @chronoscopepictures. Past projects include publication and release of “Ether • Images from The Casbah”, a limited-edition fine art book of live performance photography, chronicling Sean’s years covering shows at San Diego’s iconic rock and roll venue. A second pressing and additional volumes are also in the works. Stay tuned!
